Preparing for your colonoscopy

Diet, bowel preparation and what happens on the day.

Draft for Mr Mughal's review. Last reviewed: [date to be added on approval].

The days before

Your unit will tell you which foods to avoid, usually high fibre foods such as seeds, nuts and wholegrains for a few days. Tell us early if you take blood thinners, diabetes medicines or iron tablets, as these may need to change.

Bowel preparation

The day before, you drink a laxative solution that empties the bowel. A clear bowel lets us see the lining properly. Stay close to a toilet and keep drinking clear fluids.

On the day

Most people have sedation, so you will need someone to take you home and stay with you. The test itself usually takes 20 to 40 minutes.

Afterwards

You may feel bloated for a few hours. We will explain the findings before you go home, and any samples taken are usually back within two weeks.
